Here is one way to measure your deck height with basic tools on an Aircooled VW engine. For this video we used a set of dial calipers, deck height tool part number 5756, and a marker. This measurement way is suitable for a reasonable compression ratio street engine. After removing the cylinder head, keep any shims for the final measurements. Install the deck height tool, screw in the set screw, and rotate the crank to touch the piston to set screw. Mark this position on the flywheel or pulley -
