Researchers at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science have officially documented stone crabs in Virginia waters for the first time. The tropical species, usually found from South America to North Carolina, appears to be spreading north as the Chesapeake Bay warms. Scientists say the crabs aren’t likely to harm the ecosystem and could bring new fishery opportunities.
