During WWII, the USS Texas (BB-35) was a pivotal battleship providing naval gunfire support, most notably during the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. Acting as the flagship for the Omaha Beach bombardment, she fired 255 14-inch shells at German positions near Pointe du Hoc. She famously moved within 2.7 km of the shore to support troops. The ship participated in the invasion of North Africa (Operation Torch), the bombardment of Cherbourg—where she sustained damage from a German shell on June 25,
