Thenar Eminence 101 🖐️ That muscular pad at the base of your thumb — is the thenar eminence, and it’s everything for hand function. 💪 Key muscles: • Abductor Pollicis Brevis – lifts the thumb away from the palm • Flexor Pollicis Brevis – bends the thumb • Opponens Pollicis – brings the thumb across the palm for opposition 🧠 Why it matters: These muscles allow pinching, gripping, buttoning, texting, writing, and all fine motor skills. Weakness or atrophy here often points to median nerve invol

The thenar eminence is composed of three intrinsic muscles arranged deep to superficial: opponens pollicis, flexor pollicis brevis, and abductor pollicis brevis. • Opponens pollicis → thumb opposition • Flexor pollicis brevis → thumb MCP flexion • Abductor pollicis brevis → palmar abduction of the thumb These core functions define thumb movement and are essential in assessment and treatment of median nerve involvement. The hypothenar eminence is formed by three intrinsic muscles, with palmaris brevis lying superficially outside the compartment. All four muscles in this region are innervated by the ulnar nerve (C8, T1). • Abductor digiti minimi – deep branch of ulnar nerve • Flexor digiti minimi brevis – deep branch of ulnar nerve • Opponens digiti minimi – deep branch of ulnar nerve • Palmaris brevis – superficial branch of ulnar nerve Together, the hypothenar muscles enable small finger motion, cupping of the
