This individual is showing off one of the most incredible camouflage adaptations in the animal kingdom. Thanks to specialized cells in their skin, the European common cuttlefish is able to change its shape, texture and color patterning to seamlessly blend into the surrounding environment. In addition to acting as camouflage, the cuttlefish can also expand and contract the structures in their skin in order to communicate with other cuttlefish or predators. Watch the moment our little cuttlefish baby is born! This film was captured in the Wild Seas Centre aquarium at Kimmeridge after some stranded cuttlefish eggs were rescued from the beach. We will let the babies grow in our aquarium before releasing them into the sea. You can visit them between 10.30am and 5pm daily at the Centre.
