My starter base took 3 stacks of bricks, a trip to nether for quartz, and 2000 block travel for some dark oak.

Make a half-mine/half-house to get starter materials scout a scenic spot, usually near water for the first base, which helps reduce number of torches needed to be mob-free.

For me, a starter base is something I can cobble together on the first day, to survive the night, which is usually a few punched trees, a hole in a hill and some torches.
