The fire that claimed nine lives at an assisted-living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, "was destined to kill 50-plus people," according to the local fire chief.

A motorway was closed in both directions after a HGV fire. National Highways said the M11 between junction 10, at Duxford in Cambridgeshire, and junction eight, for Stansted Airport in Essex, was closed and fire and emergency services attended. The motorway remained closed southbound for a second incident where a crane needed to be recovered.
