MSNBC has seen its audience flee since President-elect Trump’s Election Day victory over Vice President Kamala Harris despite a historic news cycle that has unfolded in the days since.

Washington — More than a week after Election Day 2024, the results in a handful of races for the U.S. House of Representatives are still outstanding. But enough races have now been decided for CBS News to project that Republicans will hold onto control of the House with least 218 seats, the number needed for a majority.

Election night across the seven top TV networks were down compared to 2020 and 2016. The household TV ratings were the lowest since at least 1960.

Election Day is not a federal holiday. Some states do, however, observe Election Day as a holiday. Most state offices will be closed on the date, including: Twenty-four states, plus the District of Columbia, offer paid time off to vote.

In 2020, Kentucky and Vermont were among the first states where the Associated Press called the race minutes after the polls closed in each state. If the 2024 election follows a similar pattern, we could start seeing states being called one way or the other around 7 p.m. ET.
