ANALYSIS: Families are being bombed, babies are dying of cold and phase two of the talks hasn’t gone anywhere – we need a genuine and meaningful ceasefire, Bel Trew writes
JERUSALEM, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that the second phase of a U.S. plan to end the war in Gaza was close, but cautioned several key issues still needed to be resolved, including whether a multinational security force would be deployed.
Trump signed the Gaza ceasefire deal in an October ceremony in Sharm el-Sheikh which Netanyahu did not attend. The U.S. is planning a deployment of international forces to monitor Gaza, with possible participation from Arab and Muslim countries, while Egypt has not confirmed whether it will participate.
The ceasefire process that began in October as part of a 20-point plan presented by Donald Trump seems stuck in the mud and chaos of Gaza. In the first phase, Israel withdrew from the populated coastal areas. Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners were exchanged. Some aid deliveries resumed. But things have now stalled.
